Dr. Jane Muita is the UNICEF Representative for Bulgaria since June 2018. A national of Kenya who served as UNICEF Deputy Representative to Zimbabwe before her arrival in Bulgaria. Dr Muita has been a staff of UNICEF for 21 years and has worked in various countries in Africa both as a manager and team leader and as a technical expert in health, Nutrition and HIV/AIDS. In her two years in Bulgaria Dr. Muita, leads a team that continues to avail data about children and families, to advocate for fulfilment of children’s rights and to propose and test possible solutions to address bottlenecks identified. Before Joining UNICEF Dr. Muita was Senior Lecturer in the University of Nairobi where she taught in a master’s programme on Applied Human Nutrition and undertook research in public health and Nutrition and focused her efforts in identifying appropriate solutions to improve the living conditions and the nutrition and health status of populations in arid and semi-arid regions and among pastoralist communities. She also served her country as a paediatrician working for the Ministry of health. In 1997 Dr. Muita received the Martin Luther King Junior award for leadership for her contribution in research and interventions in Kenya. Dr Muita has a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery, and a Master of Medicine in Paediatrics from the University of Nairobi; and a master’s degree in Public Health from the Johns Hopkins University in the USA.
